Boeing recently announced the decision to suspend production of the 737 MAX, based around the uncertainty about the timing and conditions of return to service and global training approvals.
The planemaker stated that the production halt would not affect its own workforce, which is set to deploy in other facilities. This decision will impact the suppliers and subcontractors involved in the MAX program, including CFM International, a joint venture between Safran and General Electric that currently manufactures the LEAP-1B engine powering the airliner.
Maintaining Industry Standards
Whilst this type of engine is halting production, Boeing continues to be a major force in the aerospace sector which still requires regular maintenance, repairs and overhaul for their flights.
The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) states in their regulations that aircraft maintenance personnel must comply with Part 66 Licence, Certifying Staff and is established through four levels or authorisation. These are as follows –
• Level 1 – General Familiarisation, Unlicensed
• Level 2 – Ramp and Transit
• Level 3 – Line Certifying Staff and Base Maintenance Supporting Staff
• Level 4 – Base Maintenance Certifying Staff
