Different Types of Aircraft Corrosion
There are four main types of corrosion commonly found on aircraft –
- Uniform Surface Attack – This occurs when metal is exposed to oxygen and moisture in the air; whilst in flight. Reasons for this include low-quality body paintwork or exposure to corrosive fumes or pollutants. - Intergranular Corrosion – Difficult to detect, intergranular corrosion can destroy metal alloys with a higher amount of zinc rapidly. This type of attack is commonly found on wing spars and stringers. - Filiform Corrosion – Usually found on poorly painted aluminium surfaces as thread-like lines.
- Crevice or Deposit Corrosion – Debris and dust trapped in small cracks and space in the aircraft’s bodywork traps moisture causing the start of the corrosion process.
